Synopsis

The war in Ukraine has become a litmus test, revealing true human nature: some have withdrawn, while others, complete strangers, have stepped forward to help. This documentary project is dedicated to a war that breaks bodies but unites souls. Through the experiences of Ukrainian war victims and international volunteers, the documentary showcases the power of human connections that transcend borders and distances. "War Inside Them" tells the stories of those who, despite their disabilities, retain their will to live, and those who have made helping others a part of their destiny.

 

At the center of the narrative is Kathryn Anna Olga Cook, a nurse from Augusta, Maine, whose Ukrainian roots and deep sense of duty have driven her to send medical equipment to Ukraine and visit the country since 2014. Her journey, aimed at reconnecting with those she has helped, serves as the film's central thread, shedding light on the broader consequences of war and the power of human compassion.

 

The film introduces viewers to Serhiy and Olesya Tovstyk, a couple whose lives were irrevocably changed when Serhiy lost both arms in a shelling attack. Despite his injuries, Serhiy continues his passion for amateur radio, creating a bridge between Ukraine and the world. Another key figure is Oleksandr Darmoros, who, after losing a leg and his sight, became a psychologist dedicated to helping others rebuild their lives.

 

Supported by archival materials from 2014 and contemporary interviews,

the film highlights the work of Ukrainian War Amps (UWA), a network

of volunteers providing personalized assistance to war victims. It contrasts approaches to disability in democratic societies with Ukraine's struggle to overcome its Soviet legacy and adopt a more compassionate and inclusive perspective.

 

Through its emotionally charged narrative, "War Inside Them" invites viewers to reflect on responsibility, resilience, and the power of connection. The film serves as both a testament to global solidarity and a call to action in the face of a continuing conflict.
